

The quest should start, and then you can pick up shard. A way to fix either bug above is to reload a save in which you have not started the Dawnguard questline, then drop the The Atherium Wars and any crystal shards if you have obtained any, and pick the book back up and read it.Upon investigating Arkngthamz, "Lost to the Ages" may not be added to quest log either, meaning that you will be unable to complete the quest. Reading The Aetherium Wars may not add the miscellaneous objective "Investigate Arkngthamz" to your quest log. I found these possible solutions on the UESP and TES wikis, however, I'm unable to confirm whether or not they work. If you do this you will lose all items added by the expansion in your save and the DG DLC quest progress will reset, unfortunately. I mean, all Dawnguards' Armor sets and ancient weapons, all vampire armor sets and clothes.
